I am looking to buy a camcorder and after visiting hhgregg and best buys, I have become quite confused.

best buys told me that any camcorder with a video format of avchd will not upload to a computer or docking station whatsoever, hhgregg told me that it would. Which side is true?

  1. AVCHD based camcorders capture high definition video onto an internal hard drive (HDD), flash memory or DVD. They AVCHD files are data files like any other standard defintion camcorder that happens to use (HDD), flash memory or DVD.

The AVCHD format compresses a LOT. It is merely an variant of H.264.

So... you CAN upload it to you computer... but your video editor needs to be able to understand how to deal with the file type. AVCHD is relatively new and some editors can't do anything with that video format... Microsoft MovieMaker cannot handle it. The current versions of Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere can.
