yeah a big problem avg has been having lately I honestly think they are going down a hole and cant get back up, a couple weeks ago they had a update issue when there was a mass virus antivus xp 2008 released causing mass amounts of there users no protection against it..... i used to use but since then I have moved on why trust my 900 dollar computer to a company that even keep decent updates a plus

Lots of people can't it sounds like a problem at the AVG servers. Wait for awhile.

You can update it manually:

Steps

1. Go to http://free.avg.com/ww.download-update

Download the necessary updates to a folder

Open AVG

> Tools

>Update from directory

> chose the folder where you did

> click OK
