I'll be using the free editions... But, since so many people have been telling me they are both good.... Which one's better? AVG 8.0 or Avast Home Edition?

  1. Hello,

    I would definitely recommend Avast.

-Avast is one of the best Anti-Virus softwares there is. Avast has one of the highest virus detection rates of any software. Avast is definitely better than Avg. Everyone thinks Avg is good just because its popular, though it doesnt have good detection or removal rates compared to Avast. And the best part is that Avast is Free!

    Download it from here-

    http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Editi...

    - It Updates Automatically, and Avg Requires you to Manually update it.

    - Avast detects viruses the second you open a website or file with viruses or spware, and blocks it-before it gets on your computer, not after like avg.

-Avast has been rated as the "Best Anti-Virus of the Year" by PC World magazine.

Although Avasts interface looks like a music player, dont judge it by its cover, its really good.

    GOOD LUCK ^_^

  2. AVG. Both are good. AVG is just a little better.

  3. Avast Home Edition is a lot better, I've tested both and Avast out performs AVG.

  4. AVG Free does NOT

    - Have rootkit detection

    - Have boot scan

    - Have full functionality

    - Have reliable real-time protection

    - Stop bugging you about their awesome *cough* paid version

All that only starts working when you've paid for the "full" version.

Avast, though, *does* have full functionality, and it:

    - updates whenever an update is available (instead of on a fixed schedule like AVG)

    - doesn't continuously tell you to get better functionality by paying (because the home version already *has* full functionality)

    - detects viruses *the moment* you open a webpage or email with an auto-downloader built in, and blocks it.

Couple of weeks back I spent hours cleaning up a PC that was infested with trojans, Keyloggers and a rootkit... with AVG happily running in the background, doing NOTHING.

I removed it, did a search for a free scanner (hey - not MY PC, not gonna pay for someone else's stuff), found Avast, and it detected *everything*.

The only "down" side (if you want to call it that) is that Avast wants you to register for a license key once a year - a free license key. They make their money from people who are *willing* to pay, and from corporations who use their software.

  5. Hello both are free but  when you compare both of them together i say Avast gives you more for free. I am not going to force you to use one over the other. You can try them both to see which one you like best. Both are free so there is nothing to lose here.
