AVI to MPEG to DVD?

Question

I want to put a film I downloaded on a DVD for my mom to watch on TV. Ive tried converting my avi film to PAL mpeg, and also mpeg 1 and 2 using AnyDVD converter. Every time I try to copy it to a blank DVD I get an error saying that there is an error and it only asks me to retry copying the file. Can anyone help, this is driving me crazy
