When a submarine sneak attacks an aircraft carrier that contains two planes, and scores a hit. The aircraft carrier is sunk. But what happens to the two planes? The sub retreats.

Are the planes allowed to move to the nearest friendly occupied territory if it is it in range? OR are they just dead on the spot?

  1. The airplanes are allowed to land in the nearest friendly occupied territory.  Their movement points are not affected on their next turn.

  2. Having once served, on an Aircraft carrier, I would say, the two planes go down with the ship!!

And although the modern games would allow a Sub. to attack a carrier, in real life, a submarine couldn't get with twenty miles of of a carrier, or if attacked by a sub, the many ships around a carrier, would sacrifice themselves to save the carrier!!!!

  3. Here's the official statement from Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro:

"Q: If a particular plane started a battle on a particular carrier and that carrier is destroyed, what happens to the plane? The rules illustrate an example where a plane moves to a carrier in an adjacent sea zone. Is this possible or is the plane destroyed?

A: This was a change to revised edition. Defending planes at sea that survive their carrier sinking can retreat a distance of 1, either to an adjoining land mass or a carrier that has room to land in an adjacent sea zone. These defending planes move during the non-combat movement phase."
