The 18-year-old, who has been plying his trade at AFAS Stadion since the summer of 2010, is eligible to represent both the Oranje and Morocco at the moment. However, the youngster has made up his mind to play for the Flying Dutchman
at international level rather than representing the homeland of his father.
The highly-talented midfielder has expressed his desire to earn a spot in the Oranje squad for Euro 2012, and has revealed that he will play for the World Cup 2010 runners-up in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032 this summer if the coach needs
him.
“If the coach needs me at Euro 2012, I will be ready. It's good for my personal development to play World Cups and European championships. I'm making a lot of progress when I'm surrounded by these players”, Maher was quoted as
saying to De Telegraaf.
The technically gifted player, who had an impressive 2011/12 season in which he netted five goals and provided six assists along the way in 34 matches, went on to reveal that if he does not represent the Oranje at Euro 2012, he
will still prefer playing for the Flying Dutchman.
“I will also choose for Oranje if I don't make the squad for Euro 2012. The only difference is that I don't have to make it official yet in that case. I've discussed this with my family, and I think this is the best solution for
me”, Maher concluded.
If selected for the European competition, Maher will follow in the footsteps of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ibrahim-Afellay-c16547, who also preferred Netherlands over Morocco.
The young midfielder has an ongoing contract at AFAS Stadion that runs until the summer of 2015. However, he recently revealed that if a good offer comes in the summer, he will leave the Alkmaar outfit for greener pastures.
