Aaron Cook helps Boston Red Sox shut-out Seattle Mariners 5-0 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox shut-out Seattle Mariners 5-0 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Friday, June 29 in the second game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Starting pitcher Aaron Cook may be new to the Majors League world but he has already shown qualities of a great pitcher. Pitching with great control and accuracy, he secured his first win of the season. His performance on Friday evening is a strong argument
in his favour and Valentine might be forced to keep him on the big league roster.
Cook threw a no hitter on one of the finest days of his life to lift the Red Sox to a much needed victory. The guy made it all look too easy and the Mariners fell into his trap. Striking-out two and walking none on 81 pitches for his 12thcomplete
game, he used his groundballs to great effect. Mariners’ starter Hector Noesi has another forgettable outing as he took his tenth loss of the season.
"When you're throwing strikes early and getting them swinging it makes a world of difference. They aren't getting quite as comfortable an at-bat," Cook said. "I was able to pound the zone early and keep them swinging at pitches I want them swinging at."
"It's a step back today offensively and that's hard as h**l to do the way we've been swinging the bats here at home," Wedge said. "I'm tired of watching it."
In some ways it was an important win for the Red Sox who are tied with Tampa Bay Rays for the third place on American League East Division standings table. Manager Bobby Valentine is an experienced campaigner. It will not be wrong to say that he has given
the players some much needed self belief over the last couple of months.
Not too long ago, Boston was at the bottom of the standings table but Valentine led his team out of testing times in great style. Considering the Red Sox are just five games behind the leaders New York Yankees, they will still fancy their chances of making
it to the post season.
