Aaron Cormican and Asher Nolan advance to Round 3 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic – Surfing News
America’s Aaron Cormican and his fellow countryman Asher Nolan clinched top honours in their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in
California, America, on Wednesday, March 28.
Both Cormican and Nolan advanced through into the next round (Round of 96) after claiming victory in their respective heats. Peru’s Miguel Tudela and Hawaii’s Kaimana Jaquias made their way through into the next round as well after securing runner-up positions
in the ninth and tenth heat respectively.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site turned out to be pretty demanding, testing the skills and perseverance of the surfers in clean two-to-four foot waves. The frequency of scoring opportunities was pretty low, compelling the surfers
to stay on their toes throughout the course of the four-man battle.
Cormican used his local knowledge of the waves to down his compatriot Parker Coffin, Hawaii’s Keala Naihe and Peru’s Miguel Tudela in the ninth heat.
As the heat got underway, Cormican collected a 3.50-point wave and went on to add an additional 7.60 to his account to finish with a heat-total of 11.10 points. The score kept him in lead until the end to seal the fate of the contest in his favour.
Tudela extended his life in the ASP 4-Star event as well after scoring a 7.00 and 4.00 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.00 points.
Coffin and Naihe rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 5.77 and 1.49 points respectively, consequently getting removed from the contention for the event title.
The 10th heat saw Nolan steal the show with his superb performance as he squared off with his fellow countryman Chris Tucker, Hawaii’s Jaquias and Costa Rico’s Diego Naranjo.
Nolan locked his first business-wave early in the heat to post a 7.17 on the scoreboard. Almost halfway through the heat, the American surfer caught his second wave to unload a series of exquisite manoeuvres, posting an 8.50 on the scoreboard to finish with
a heat-total of 15.67 points.
Jaquias finished behind Nolan in second place after scoring a heat-total of 12.37 points, which included a 5.67 and 6.70-point wave.
Tucker got penalised after getting an interference call and eventually finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.91 points, whereas Naranjo rounded out the fourth position with a heat-total of 7.27 points. Both the surfers got eliminated from the event
as a result.
