Aaron Cormican and Miguel Tudela prevail in Round 4 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic – Surfing News
America’s Aaron Cormican and Peru’s Miguel Tudela stepped into the fourth round (Round of 64) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic after snatching victory in their respective Round 3 (Round of 96) heats that went down
at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Thursday, March 29.
Hawaii’s Gavin Gillette and America’s Asher Nolan made their way through into the next round as well after claiming runner-up positions in the ninth and tenth heat of Round 3 respectively.
The medium sized waves on offer at Huntington Beach seemed pretty promising, though the low frequency at which they appeared turned out to be quite troublesome for the surfers as they hunted for good scores.
Pitted against his fellow countryman Dane Anderson and the Hawaiian surfers Gillette and Kaimana Jaquias in the ninth heat, Cormican needed to come up with something special to make his way into the next round.
Rising to the occasion, the American surfer went through a series of mediocre-scores before locking his first business-wave to post a 5.13 on the score-board. A few more average-scores were followed by a 6.60-point wave to get him to a heat-total of 11.73
points. The effort remained unmatched by his rivals, enabling him to clinch victory.
Gillette successfully extended his life in the event by securing runner-up position through a heat-total of 10.80 points, which included a 5.67 and 5.13-point wave.
Anderson and Jaquias were forced to join the elimination list after rounding out the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 10.44 and 10.20 points respectively.
The 10th heat saw Tudela get the better of Nolan, Mexico’s Angelo Lozano and Brazil’s Diego Rosa in a four-man battle.
The Peruvian surfer got off to a shaky start, but eventually got his hands on a couple of relatively good waves to collect a 5.40 and 6.50 off them. The resultant heat-total of 11.90 points turned out to be decisive, sealing the fate of the battle in his
favour.
Scoring a 5.83 and 4.13 off his top-two waves for a heat-total of 9.96 points, Nolan confirmed his place in the fourth round as well.
Lozano finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.93 points, whereas Rosa rounded out the fourth position after scoring a heat-total of 8.60 points. Both the surfers were consequently removed from the competition field.
