Aaron Goldberg wins Canadian Championship
Aaron Goldberg ruled the Canadian Championship when the season concluded on the 29th of August, 2010. After playing a rather classy game, Goldberg now stands with the honour of winning one of the most dominating seasons along with winning $151, 000.
The man from California ran away with the Canadian Championship with a 6 stroke lead. The final round of the Championship was led by Goldberg with a 5 under 65.
Considering Goldberg’s earlier wins, he has managed to break the all-time Canadian money tour record. The earlier record was held by Trevor Dodds in 1996 with the prize money of $129,158. This years’ total purse for the Canadian Tour was the biggest in history amounting to $325,000.
This stands as Goldberg’s third victory in the last four games as the player has left a permanent mark in Canadian Championships.
Goldberg was paired with Hanson who in R1 scored two birdies in the first two holes. Goldberg replied with birdies at the 4th and the 5th hole. At the 8th hole however, both players managed a double bogey which allowed Gonzales to share the lead till the 12th hole where he doubled at par 3. His previous act gave the lead in Goldberg's hands.
According to the leader board, Goldberg was playing the lead from golfers Josh Habig and Clayton Rask who were standing at 65. They were tied for the second spot at 271 with a 9 under after which Brian Unk, Mitch Gills and Kane Hanson joined the strive for the runners up position. They were holding at 66, 68 and 71 after five players were tied for the second spot. Reports tell that the events top 17 places were ruled by either Canadian or American golfers.
At the last round of the Championship, Goldberg managed to play a 265 with a 15 under par. He was six shots ahead of the previous player. In R1, Goldberg played 3 birdies and 5 bogeys. However, in the second round, the 25-year-old managed to score 3 birdies and 4 bogeys. The final round consisted of a double bogey, 5 birdies and an eagle giving him a hand on victory.
After building this amazing resume and breaking a long held record, Goldberg now has his focus on breaking one of Dodd’s records in November. If the 25-year-old wins The Desert Dunes Classic, he would also hold the record for the most number of wins in one season. Dodd achieved the title for the highest number of wins with 4 titles during the same campaign.
Goldberg exclaimed that this has been an event worth remembering. The turning point for the golfer came at the 14th hole where Goldberg very efficiently managed a birdie and Hanson could only manage a bogey. After the 15 foot long shot, Goldberg achieved another birdie at the 15th hole. This proved to be an amazing game since the California Guy other than a birdie added an eagle as well at the 16th hole. At the 17th, Goldberg faced another birdie as he soared towards the last 5 holes with a 5 under par.
After Goldberg’s current performance, the golfer will aim to make it to the PGA tour Q-school at the second stage. To enter the finals, the golfer needs to work 6 more rounds in the days to come. Goldberg has earned an exemption into the second stage of the Qualifying school along with Brock Mackenzie. The American fought against the challenge being thrown by Adam Hadwin with the help of a 30 in the back 9.
According to Goldberg, he had realized that it won’t be long enough when some other golfer would make birdies after the 14th hole and end up changing the boards. A player who can make decisions under pressure can rise to any event and it is Goldberg’s quick decision making that led him to play a tactful and an aggressive game leading him to a victory that made history.
