Aaron Gwin makes World Cup history after winning UCI Downhill Mountain Bike title - Cycling News
Trek world racing team’s Aaron Gwin was the first American man, who won the UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup victory in La Bresse on Sunday, August 7. The 23-year-old, Aaron stands atop in World Cup podium in Italy in two week’s time to secure the prized
crystal trophy.
The first World Cup series was in held 1989. Previously, Nino Schurter won the MTB world cup in 2010 while the four time winner in (2006-2009) Julien Absalon was runner-up.
Aaron Gwin was in third place in the Downhill World Cup after stage winner Greg Minnaar of Santa Cruz Syndicate and runner-up Gee Atherton of Commencal.
The crash held in the stage as so many riders were unable to hold the pace while Bryceland using flat pedal after the crash but in the final jump his right foot slipped and he dropped. The two time world champion Fabien Barel also managed to recover from
a near crash but failed. Gwin also made error in the top of the climb, due to this he lost time and grabbed third place in the stage.
After the stage Gwin was very disappointed form his performance and said, "It's obviously a huge honor to win the overall World Cup, honestly, but any racer out there will know that it always feel better when you take something like that with a run you're
proud of."
He further added, "I made some mistakes today that cost me the win. Any one of my practice runs would have been better than that, but hats off to Greg."
After round six UCI downhill standing, Aaron Gwin was in first place with 1308 points while Greg Minnaar was second place with 998 points. Gee Atherton was in third place with 847 points.
Recently, Gwin was in first place in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and also grabbed first spot in Leogang, Austria and Mont Sainte-Anne, Quebec.
After the Nordkette Pro Invitational in Innsbruck, Gwin will contest in the final round of the World Cup in Italy on August 20-21.
