Question:

Abandoned Animal Laws

Here is the situation:

There has been a horse running around the area we live in for the past three weeks. The owner knew it was loss and made no attempt to catch it. We don't personally know him. Tonight, my husband caught it and put it up in our barn. Someone told him if the man comes to claim it, he can charge him up to $10 per day for feed/board. Is that true?

  1. From a Lawyer.Since the animal isnt actually abandoned then you cannot legally take the animal unless you suspect cruelty or mistreatment. Even then you have to ask the owner permission to take the animal. And no why would he be entitled to any money? The animal is basically being taken care of for free. (to him)  But i suggest call the local law enforcement have them come out and order your neighbor to fence the animal up. If the animal is on your prop. then you need to notify police.
