Question:

Abandoned birds nest??

I have , in the bush in my front yard, what appears to be a chipping sparrows nest. I googled information on the bird and found that the eggs usually hatch within 14 days. There are five of them and they have been there over a month. We think because there is so much activity in that area with the kids that the bird got spooked and abandoned the nest. She used to fly at us if we got too close not thinking but there has been no sign of her for a while. Any idea if I can do anything to get these guys to hatch or should I leave them??

Also : I have cared for an abandoned baby bird before and it survived.

  1. pick up each eg one by one and hold them up to the light, you will beable to see a bird in side and will know if it is alive.

im afraid it may be too late

  2. If they have been sitting in the nest for a month...they died long ago.  Nothing you can do for them.  Also, it is illegal for you to possess eggs of a wild native bird..they are protected by law.

  3. when they hatch take them to a animal place to maybe later be adopted

  4. We all find bird nests from time to time and some of us even construct them at summer camp. I found a birds nest with lichens in it once. A closer look revealed spider webs too. As I pulled it apart I saw more and more spider webs. Let me tell you how I figured out what kind of bird had built this nest. The size, 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) across is pretty small, so obviously it hadn't been built by anything like a hawk, crow, or even something as large as an American Robin or a Mockingbird. My nest was shaped like a cup and I could see from the fact that no lichens had been stuck to the nest's lower sides that the nest probably had been built in the fork of a tree branch.

  5. I'm really sorry, but if the nest has been there over a month, they are not going to hatch. =[

  6. idk

  7. If the same eggs have been there for over a month, chances are that they are not viable and won't hatch no matter what.  Chipping sparrows are friendly little things, and they sometimes lay a new clutch in the same place if something happens to the first one (snake, grackle attack, etc.), so maybe these eggs aren't the original ones and aren't that old.

I think your chances of raising little birds would be much better than getting the eggs to hatch, though.  It's great that you are so caring!

  8. Hmmmm....sounds maybe a bit to late...perhaps you could buy an incubater? But dont be upset/disappointed if nothing happens...good luck!
