In risk management one abatement technique would be removal of the hazard. An example would be removal of asbestos in an older building.

If removal is not an option you might need to modify the hazard. An example would be a loud machine that creates a potentially hazardous noise level. If the machine cannot be removed a cover could be fabricated to contain the noise. If that is not possible the employees in the area could be required to wear ear protective headsets.

Isolation would be yet another technique, where no one is allowed in a construction area other than the workers in order to abate potential injury to members of the public.
