Abbie Johnston wins Women’s 50m breaststroke gold – New Zealand SC Championships
Abbie Johnston of AquaGym Swim Team-CB won gold medal of the Women’s 50m breaststroke in 16 and over age category on first day of the State 2012 New Zealand Short Course Championships at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Wellington on Sunday, September
30.
The 16-year-old Johnston remained marginally ahead of her opponents in the double lap discipline and proved her eligibility for the title.
She faced tough battle from her following swimmer throughout the race but managed to overpower her over the finishing end and tapped the wall for gold medal with a timing of 32.63 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Emily McGill of Capital Swim Club-WN, who remained 0.17 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and occupied silver medal of the race by producing an effort of 32.80 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Jane Ip of West Auckland Aquatics-AK, who suffered a loss of only 0.07 seconds from her preceding swimmer and tapped the wall with a timing of 32.87 seconds for bronze medal.
Fourth position of the race was obtained by Dayna Kiekebosch of Fairfield-WK, who was 0.26 seconds behind and settled on the wall with a timing of 33.13 seconds.
Kiekebosch was chased by Katie Kenneally of Neptune Swimming Club-OT, who was 0.07 seconds away from overpowering her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with a timing of 33.20 seconds for fifth place.
Kenneally was trailed by Bronagh Ryan of Porirua City Aquatics-WN, who was 0.06 seconds apart and touched the wall with a timing of 33.26 seconds for sixth position.
Seventh finest spot of the race was obtained by Kendall Reidy of Central Hawkes Bay-HP, who was only 0.02 seconds slower from her and surfaced on the wall by submitting an effort of 33.28 seconds.
Last spot of the race was secured by Helena Gasson of Thames-WK, who remained 0.07 seconds slower and touched the wall for eighth position by producing a time of 33.35 seconds.
In addition, Johnston expressed happiness over her victory in the shortest breaststroke discipline and received awards and accolades at the victory ceremony of the tournament.
