Abbotsford Heat’s goaltender Barry Brust sets new AHL record for most scoreless minutes
Barry Brust, a Canadian ice hockey professional, who plays for Abbotsford Heat as a goaltender in the American Hockey League (AHL) set the league’s new record for having most scoreless minutes. He broke the previous record of Johnny Bower which the 88-year-old
former goalie had set 55 years back.
29-year-old Brust got the record to his name at 18 minutes 11 seconds of the first period of the game against San Antonio Rampage, when he remained unbeaten for 249 minutes and 52 seconds as Bower had remained unbeaten for 249 minutes and 51 seconds, playing
for Cleveland Barons in the 1957 season.
He made the record better by not allowing a goal for another 19 minutes and had the goal scored against him in the 17 minute of the second period. This took his record to 268 minutes and 17 seconds. James Wright was the player who was able to break the deadlock
and score the goal much awaited goal for the Rampage fans.
After not allowing a goal for 5 consecutive games, he had another scored against him inside two minutes when he conceded one after one minute and 35 seconds.
The Swan River, Manitoba native earned a lot of praise for keeping the shut out (clean sheet) streak going, which he kept in both of the games against Lake Erie Monsters. Talking to Vancouver Sun, Heat’s coach Troy Ward discussed his player’s streak as he
said,
"Barry's shutout streak was really a hot issue right after the two Lake Erie games and then it was, like, how can you not play this guy? And I was, like, well, he's a part of the team and we're going through a process. The process has worked for Barry to
this point so why would I change it?"
The record breaking goalie, Brust, who himself has not been the number one option for his team, praised his defenseman and gave the credit to them as he said,
"I think the situation here is unique. As far as the streak goes, goals against is a team stat and I feel like it's been a nice little feather in our cap, showing how good we've been defensively as a group so far."
