Abby O’Connor wins 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award - Volleyball
The 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award is going to go to Abby O’Connor this year. The award will be presented to O’Connor on Friday in a ceremony.
O’Connor is being given the honour because she has been able to tally an average of 5.66 digs per set this season. This average was achieved after having registered a total of 645 kills this year. The highest number of digs that O’Connor was able to pull
off in any match was 36.
O’Connor played as a libero for the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team. She has topped off her career with an impressive record by registering 1977 digs. This translates into O’Connor becoming the second position in her school program to have managed to pull
off so many digs. On top of that, these many digs have been tallied in OVC for the seventh time since its inception.
O’Connor is one of the few people who are able to maintain a well balanced life. It is not only in volleyball that she has made her mark but O’Connor has taken her academics seriously as well. She has managed a GPA of 3.88 in her bachelor’s in environmental
studies. Not only that, O’Connor has been selected three times to be a Presidential Scholar while she earned the credit of being a Colonel Scholar four times.
The award that O’Connor will receive on Friday is an annual prize that is handed over to either a female or a male athlete. The significance of the award is that it is named after Steve Hamilton, who was a coach as well as an administrator at the university.
The requirement that the recipient of the award needs to have is to be an excellent sports person and show good sportsmanship. Along with that, qualities which signify social responsibility are also taken into account.
Along with O’Connor, various other candidates were selected from different sports fields to be eligible for this award. They include names like Chelsea Pelletier who belongs to the soccer team and Chelsea Harris who plays golf.
