Abdul Qadir, the former Pakistani leg-spinner, has claimed that the quality of cricket was much better in the 70s and 80s as compared to the modern-day sport and expressed that most of the players play for money these days instead
of finding pride in representing their countries.
The 56-year-year old is considered to be one of the finest exponents of leg-spin bowling in the history of the game. Between 1977 and 1993, the legendary cricketer played 67 Tests and 104 One Day Internationals for Pakistan, in which
he grabbed 236 and 132 scalps respectively.
Abdul Qadir remained one of the most threatening spinners of his era and helped Pakistan become one of the leading cricketing nations of the world.
The former leg-spinner expressed that there were great cricketers in every side during his playing days, which posed massive challenges to the opposing teams.
He believes,  “We were quite fortunate that we had played in the golden era of cricket as at that time great players like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marshall-c74817 and many more
were applying their trade and there was a tough competition at that time.”
The former chief selector of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board further added that it is extremely easy for present-day cricketers to excel because they do not have to face the same level of competition.
An expert of wrist-spin, who troubled even the best of the batsmen in his playing days, feels that the quality of batting has deteriorated over the years and a good bowler can make a name for himself without much of a trouble.
“These days’ boys are very lucky, as they have to play against ordinary players; bowlers are especially very lucky as there are no great hitters of our days. There are good opportunities for players, they have been provided excellent
platform,” Abdul Qadir added.
The former great presently runs a cricket academy in Lahore to train the youngsters and is still attached with the game in one form or the other.
