Pakistan’s left-arm spinner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 County Cricket Club for the remainder of the 2012 county season.
Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Brian Rose, on Sunday confirmed that the 32-year-old left-arm orthodox bowler has signed a contract to come to the County Ground for the ensuing matches of the ongoing season.
"We looked at other possible targets, but he was always high on the list," said Somerset's director of cricket, Brian Rose while speaking to media reporters on Sunday afternoon. "He has an excellent first-class record, with bowling average not dissimilar
to Murali Kartik's,” he added further.
The county will be without its Irish import http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, in August this year.
Abdur Rehman's chances are strengthened by the fact that he is not on Pakistan's T20 squad, and is free to join the county for the remaining part of the season.
"Rehman also bats reasonably well, going in around number eight, so that was also a plus point when it came to signing him,” said the County's Director of Cricket.
"The other positive is that he is not currently in Pakistan's T20 side, once he joins us he should be available for the remainder of our season," he hoped.
Rehman will reach Taunton sometime in the second half of July, subject to visa approval. However, Rose was hopeful the Pakistan spinner will be available in time for Somerset's LV= County Championship match against Warwickshire Bears, commencing at County
Ground Taunton, on July 18.
"It just remains for Abdur to sort out a visa," said Rose. "…we hope he’ll be with us in time for our Championship game with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warwickshire-c862," he added further.
Rehman, 32, has played in 16 Test matches for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in January this year. His last appearance for his country came only last week,
against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
Though the 32-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner from Pakistan has featured in 119 first-class matches, he is yet to debut in county cricket.
