Aberdeen boss 'comfortable' despite 9-0 Celtic thumping
Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee says that his position is a “comfortable” one, despite being on the receiving end of a 9-0 demolition at the hands of Celtic.
The sides met at Celtic Park on Saturday, 6 November, in a Scottish Premier League clash. Celtic forwards Anthony Stokes and Gary Hooper both grabbed hat-tricks, while Joe Ledley and Paddy McCourt both netted
for the home side. Josh Magennis added insult to injury by scoring an own goal.
The result has left Aberdeen in ninth place in the table with ten points from 11 games. They are just two points ahead of St Mirren, who are in last place. After the Celtic defeat — the heaviest in Aberdeen’s
history — board members met at Pittodrie to discuss the club’s future.
Since McGhee took over as the club’s boss in June 2009, Aberdeen have won just 17 out of 58 games. While he would not discuss the talks held by his club’s board, he said that he was “embarrassed” by the
heavy loss.
Despite such an emphatic defeat and his poor winning record, McGhee insisted that it was not yet time for him to leave his post.
He told reporters that: "I'm a realist. I've been in the game a long time and I know how it works.
'I know when it's time to leave'
"I've left lots of football clubs for different reasons. It's generally been my own decision, whether it's leaving to go somewhere else or coming to a conclusion with people around me that it was time to
leave — and you know when that is.
"I certainly don't have that feeling at the moment. You have a feeling in your stomach that you don't want to come in here or that you can't face walking out in front of the crowd. The day I have that, I'll
know it's time up for me."
Aberdeen will next play Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Tuesday, 9 November, in what many pundits view as a must-win game for McGhee if he is to save his job. However, the former Motherwell boss has his work
cut out as Inverness have not been defeated in an away league game for a year.
