Aberdeen boss tells defence to improve or face Celtic thumping

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee has urged his defenders to improve quickly or face humiliation at the hands of Scottish Premier League giants Celtic.

The Dons have struggled this campaign and have failed to keep a clean sheet in 10 of their games across all competitions, a fact which has contributed to the club lying just two points off the foot of the table.

Aberdeen have taken just four points from their last eight games and McGee has been working hard with his players to shore up the back line ahead of their trip to Parkhead on Saturday, 6 November.

The Dons lost 2-1 to bottom-of-the-table St Mirren in their last match and McGhee is determined to stop the rot.

He told the Daily Record that: "If we defend and perform like we did against St Mirren, Celtic have players who can take advantage and punish us in every situation.

"We have to be stronger defensively to ensure there's no chance of being annihilated.
'Celtic can score from anywhere'

"Celtic have got set-piece specialists, runners and proven goalscorers. On top of that they can score from range and have guys who are strong in the air.”

The former Motherwell manager added that Aberdeen were particularly weak against set-pieces and that he was desperate for his players to improve their defending against corners and free-kicks.

"Losing goals from set-pieces is a real concern. Unfortunately, teams get a corner and we are letting them in to score from that far too often.

"We allowed St Mirren to score with a header directly from a corner.

"Teams will now be thinking all they have to do against us is be a little patient and when they get a corner, fire it into the box and there will be a chance of getting a goal.”
