Abha Mankar reaches finals as first female driver for Force India talent hunt programme – Formula 1
A female driver, Abha Mankar has qualified for the finals of the “Force India Hunt,” a talent hunt programme launched by the Indian Formula 1 team.
Mankar is considered to be a very competitive driver and has qualified for the grand finale of the programme after putting up a great show.
The grand finale is going to take place in Silverstone and last for around a week. Force India boss Vijay Mallya stated that he is satisfied with the results of the hunt so far.
“Since we launched India's first ever serious initiative and platform for young Indians to showcase their racing talent via a karting programme in India, we have had an extremely enthusiastic response in all the regional trials so far,” Mallya said.
This competition starts off with some regional rounds which take place in areas where aspiring young drivers score some lap times based on which their qualification for the national final depends. The final takes place in September and at the latest regional
round in Hyderabad, Abha Mankar scored the fastest time and qualified for the finals which will include around 100 drivers from 10 places.
“The week-long Hyderabad leg of the One From a Billion Hunt has given us 14 talented finalists who will now proceed to the national final where they will compete with 86 other talented finalists later this year and I wish the 14 finalists from Hyderabad
all the very best,” said Force India’s boss.
Force India became a part of Formula 1 in 2008 and one has to admit that the team’s performance since the past couple of seasons has highlighted its name in the sport with regular finishes amongst points.
The team is also supporting motorsports in India and Force India have definitely made Formula 1 much more popular in the country as well. As a result, the first Indian Grand Prix is going to take place at the end of 2011.
