Abierto Mexicano Telcel Men’s First Round: Alexandr Dolgopolov defeats Paul Capdeville
Ukrainian tennis player, Alexandr Dolgopolov, defeated Chilean pro, Paul Capdeville, in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the 2011 Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament in Acapulco. The tournament, which is held at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess,
is one of the ATP 500 World Tour Series.
The first round match between Dolgopolov and Capdeville lasted under an hour and thirty minutes, with the Ukrainian player managing to defeat his opponent in straight sets.
The opening set of the match was a challenging one for both players. Dolgopolov is ranked much higher than Capdeville, but the Chilean pro seemed to make up for this discrepancy by playing a careful game and defending himself well against his opponent. He
scored two aces and committed just one double fault in the first set, in addition to which he also saved four of six break points. Dolgopolov seemed to flounder slightly, failing to defend himself against one break point and then allowing the match to go into
a tie-breaker. A total of 12 service and return games were played before Dolgopolov took back the lead and won the first set 7-5 with just two points more than his 27-year-old opponent.
The second set was a much easier victory for Dolgopolov, who demonstrated his remarkable stamina earlier this year at the Australian Open. He seemed refreshed by his victory in the first set, while Capdeville looked exhausted from his efforts. Dolgopolov
also has the added benefit of age, being five years younger than his opponent. He managed to convert three break points successfully, while Capdeville stuttered throughout the match. The Chilean pro was also unable to score any aces, while Dolgopolov took
the lead with seven such shots. It took Dolgopolov, who is currently ranked World Number 26, just eight games to defeat his opponent.
Sixth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov has proved himself to be an able player over the past two months. He made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open in January, and has won eleven of the sixteen matches he has competed in so far in 2011. Capdeville, on
the other hand, has been playing on the men’s circuit for almost ten years and has not proven to be an exceptional player. He has lost both the matches he competed in so far this year, and he is currently ranked World Number 171.
The Ukrainian pro will be competing against Canadian special exempt player Milos Raonic, or his opponent Carlos Berlocq from Argentine. Dolgopolov’s competition depends on the outcome of the first round match between these two players.
