Abierto Mexicano Telcel Open: Defending champion David Ferrer wins first round against Adrian Ungur
Defending champion David Ferrer defeated the unseeded Adrian Ungur of Romania in the first round of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel on Monday night. The top seed simply outplayed his Romanian competitor in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 to pass through to the second round of the event.
The defending champion was in a destructive mood while playing his first match of the contest. The Spaniard is well known for his big serve and it was one of the differentiating factors between the two competitors.
Ferrer had a phenomenal first serve percentage and was not broken in the opening set. The 28-year old was very responsive to the opponent’s moves; his mighty forehand worked perfectly as he cracked plenty of winners down the line.
The unseeded Romanian proved to be no match for the defending champion. His flawed defence and bleak serve provided enough opportunity for Ferrer to capitalise on.
The opening set was an all Ferrer show. The top seed ignited the game in an aggressive fashion and a couple of early serve breaks put him in a commanding lead of 4-1.
The Romanian succumbed under match pressure, committing a series of errors and allowing the Spaniard to consolidate his position in the set. Ferrer kept his winning momentum going and bagged another service break at 5-1 to seal the opener in barely 30 minutes.
Ungur showed some signs of life early in the second set, but couldn’t do much against the sheer dominance of the Spaniard. Ungur broke the Spanish serve in the very first game of the preceding set but the defending champion retaliated with the same to lead 2-1. Ferrer’s forehand earned him another break point in the sixth game taking the score to 4-2.
The top seed squandered his first match point at 5-2, when Ungur fought valiantly to stay in the match. Ferrer served out comprehensively in the ninth game of the second set to register victory at 6-3.
Ferrer will face either Santiago Gonzalez or Daniel Garza in his second round match later this week.
