American wild card entrant, Abigail Spears slew 18-year-old Argentinean, Paula Ormaechea, with double breadsticks to advance into the main draw of the 2011 Open de Bruxelles, a red clay court event held in Brussels, Belgium on
Monday.
World number 396 Spears took just under one hour to down the Argentinean, ranked 159 places above her, with an awesome 6-1, 6-1 score line at Royal Primerose Tennis Club.
Meeting for the first time, 29-year-old American easily triumphed over Ormaechea in straight sets to book a spot in the main draw. She was on a five match losing streak before lady luck took her side in this WTA Premier event.
The lower ranked American triumphed over Chinese wild card enterant Zi Yan in a three set thriller and sixth seeded Georgian Oksana Kalashnikova in straight sets in the first two qualifiers.
The American thundered into the first set and held her opening serve spectacularly. She produced a lower first serve share of 60 percent as compared to Argentinean’s 72 percent but registered an impressive 73 percent win on it.
The American faced zero breakpoint and converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to seal the set by winning six games to one.
Spears maintained her momentum in the second set and broke the youngster’s serve in the very first game. Although she lost her serve in the proceeding game, the American unleashed blistering forehands to reel off next five games
in a row and clinch a breadstick win. Spears produced a poor first serve share of 65 percent as opposed to Ormaechea’s 80 percent but earned a convincing 65 percent win on it. Despite clobbering more double faults and losing her serve once, she converted four
out of five breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to help seal the deal easily.
Spears moves on ahead to play South African Chanelle Scheepers in her opening round match here.
