Abner Cotto to defend undefeated streak against Juan Montiel in non-title bout – Boxing news
Abner Cotto, the WBC FECARBOX and Puerto Rican lightweight champion, will defend his undefeated streak against quiet an easy opponent, Mexican Juan Montiel, in an eight-round non-title bout which will be held on July 14, 2012.
The duo will meet on the fight card headlined by the much hyped and anticipated bout between Amir Khan and Danny Garcia. The event is being organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions.
In addition to the above main event, the high-profile pay-per-view will also witness Fernando Guerrero collide with Jose Medina in a non-title super featherweight 10-round bout, co-headlining the showdown.
The event will be televised live from Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on HBO’s Saturday night weekly boxing show. Abner, who is also the proud cousin of Puerto Rican legend boxers Jose and Miguel Cotto, while sharing his
thoughts about the upcoming bout, stated, “I am very happy with the turn that my career has taken. We have done the job and are looking at the results. I know there are big plans with me and I am ready for it. I have a great team and our goal is to become
world champion.”
Abner, 24, will enter his career’s 14th bout. The young lad, also known as ‘Pin’, boasts an undefeated streak, collecting five of his 13 wins by knocking the opponent out cold. Moreover, the orthodox Abner is coming off a unanimous decision win over two
big names Fernando Torres and Hevinson Herrera.
His Saturday night opponent, Montiel, is not an easy pugilist as Juan grabbed media’s attention by collecting a majority draw decision against undefeated Carlos Molina, the current WBO intercontinental lightweight champion.
Though Juan is entering the ring with five losses and just five wins in a total of 13 bouts yet he has the ability to place some powerful jabs that can stun the opponents easily. Abner, while attending the pre-bout press conference, vowed that he will show
the world again what Abner is all about.
Cotto stated, “This is my third fight in Las Vegas. I feel very comfortable fighting here. I had a tremendous training camp and my motivation is even higher. On Saturday I will show again what Abner Cotto is about.”
The odds are undoubtedly in favour of Abner who has grabbed two titles in his last two bouts against intimidating names in the division.
