Abner Mares-Eric Morel to enter 12-round skirmish for vacant WBC super bantamweight gold – Boxing news
Abner Mares, the current IBF and WBC silver bantamweight champion, has finalised and sealed the bout-contract with Eric Morel, the former WBA flyweight champion, as a result the duo will now brawl each other for the vacant WBC super bantamweight gold on
April 21, 2012.
The event which is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions will be televised on Showtime’s championship boxing show and will be co-headlined by the bout between Anselmo Moreno and David De La Mora. The ring for the event will be stretched at Don Haskins
Convention Center situated in El Paso, Texas, United States.
Abner and Eric both met recently in a press-conference to announce the epic bout and shared their thoughts about the engagement. Abner, 26, has been in a total 24 bouts and came out victorious in 23. He has collected 13 of his total wins by knockout and
is on an undefeated win streak.
Abner has proudly held the WBO NABO bantamweight title and recently defended his IBF and WBC bantamweight titles against Joseph Agbeko, the man from whom he took them in the first place, by collecting a unanimous decision in his favour.
Eric, on the other hand, is a veteran who has been in a total 48 bouts. The 36-year-old has lost just two brawls and boasts 23 of his total 46 wins by knockout. Also known as ‘Little Hands Of Steel’, the Puerto Rican proud has held many titles in his long
and illustrious career.
During the press conference the duo exhibited their utmost excitement about getting a shot at the apex divisional gold. The invincible Abner, while sharing his thoughts said, “This is a dream come true to be fighting for the WBC title. Eric Morel is a great
fighter. He will be a world champion again someday, just not at 122 and not on April 21. I became the world champion there (118 pounds) and now it’s time to become a world champion at super bantamweight.”
Eric while carefully selecting his words said, “I’m aware of Mares’ style, power, speed and what he is capable of doing. I know I can pull it off. I know I have the style and speed to do it and I’m going to do it. This is the most important fight of my career.
I will do everything in my power to be victorious.”
The duo will definitely put up a great show and it is hard to judge who will come out victorious since both are prolific pugilists but at the same time Abner needs to be a bit careful since he is seriously overshadowed by Eric’s hefty and intimidating experience.
