Abner Mares: Erik Morel is a tough opponent and I am not underestimating him – Boxing news
Abner Mares, the current IBF and WBC silver bantamweight champion, recently shared his thoughts about his upcoming bout with Erik Morel and commented that he respects the former WBO NABO super flyweight champion.
He added that he just wants to put forth an epic show adding that he never underestimates any pugilist and believes that Erik will enter the ring fully prepared.
Abner and Erik are scheduled to headline the April 21, 2012 pay-per-view put forth by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and the ring will be stretched at Don Haskins Convention Center situated in El Paso, Texas, United States.
The event will be co-headlined by the WBA super world bantamweight championship bout between Anselmo Moreno and David De La Mora. Abner and Erik recently met at the pre-bout press conference and shared their thoughts about the Saturday night event.
Abner, 26, has been in a total 24 bouts and has never lost even a single one. He has nailed 13 of his total 23 opponents by knockout and possesses a decent win as well as knockout ratio.
But when compared to Erik, the young Abner is seriously outclassed. Morel has been in a total 48 bouts and has lost just two in his whole career. The 36-year-old has collected 23 of his total 46 wins by knockout and therefore has a clear upper hand over
Mares in both vital facets.
During the press conference, Abner commented that he will put forth the Texan boxing fans an impressive performance adding that he has prepared extremely well and understands the lethalness of Erik.
Mares remarked, “This fight is going to be really good. I am not underestimating Eric Morel. I train really hard for any fighter because I want to give a great show. I want to show a different Abner every time I face anyone. I know Eric trained really hard
as well and it’s only going to make this fight really interesting. This is really going to be a good and explosive fight.”
The former champion Erik, also known as the ‘Little Hands of Steel’, reiterated that he will not allow Abner to squash his dreams adding that Mares is a strong, talented, and high-calibre pugilist who is following his own dreams but he will not allow the
Mexican proud to supersede him.
Morel commented, “This is going to be a great fight. Nothing is going to stop me. Age is not going to be an excuse. I’m well prepared. I know Mares is extremely hungry and a very good fighter, very talented. He has his dreams and I’ve got mine, too.”
The bout will definitely be a showdown to remember since both men have their respective intimidating factors that are even confusing the critics to decide as to who will emerge victorious.
The odds, undoubtedly, are in favour of Erik but if Abner uses his agility and overcomes Erik’s experience, a different outcome can also be expected.
