Abner Mares: I do not want to lose or have a draw against Joseph Agbeko – Boxing news
The undefeated Mexican pugilist and World Boxing Council’s Silver 118 pounds Champion Abner Mares is fully confident ahead of his bout against the International Boxing Federation’s Bantamweight Champion of the World, Joseph Agbeko.
Mares will take on Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko in the Bantamweight Tournament Final on Saturday August 13, 2011 at the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This fight in which Agbeko’s IBF title and Mares’ WBA Silver bantamweight belt will be on the line was previously scheduled in April 2011 but the fight could not happen. The reason was that Agbeko was suffering from sciatica less than a week before the bout
was to take place.
Therefore Mares, who has won all of his 21 professional fights out of 22 (1 draw) including 13 by the way of a knockout, is excited for the fight.
Mares told the media he has waited long for this fight and now he is ready to take on Agbeko.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “We are getting close to this fight that I’ve been waiting for quite some time. The fight got cancelled back in April and now we’re less than 13 days away. I’m ready to do this.”
The 25-year-old Mares stated he had options to take on any other fighter when the fight was first cancelled but he did not do it because he was preparing for a world title shot. He also added Agbeko has deserved a place in the finals and taking someone else
would have been not fair with him.
Mares remarked, “I had more to lose than to win so saying that, the whole camp just decided to wait for Agbeko. He made it to the finals and it’s only right to fight him for the SHOWTIME Bantamweight title.”
In the end however, Mares claimed he is going to enter the ring to lose or to have draw.
“I had a draw against Yonnhy in a fight a lot of people thought I won. So I definitely don’t want to lose or have a draw in this fight,” Mares claimed.
