Abner Mares: I thought sciatica could be the end of Joseph Agbeko’s career – Boxing news
The current World Boxing Council’s Silver 118 pounds champion Abner Mares is delighted on the return of his opponent Joseph Agbeko, who is the current International Boxing Federation’s Bantamweight Championship belt holder.
Mares and Agbeko both will take on each other in the ‘Winner takes all’ Bantamweight Tournament final on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This bout which will have Agbeko’s IBF title and Mares’ WBC Silver bantamweight belt both on the line was previously scheduled in April 2011 but was cancelled due to fact that Agbeko suffered from sciatica less than a week before the fight was to take place.
Now that Agbeko has recovered, Mares is happy for him. Mares showed great respect for his opponent and told the media he felt very bad for him when he came to know why he called off the fight in April.
The undefeated Mexican pugilist, Mares, who has won all of his 21 fights out of 22 (1 draw) including 13 by the way of a knockout, stated his family members have also suffered from sciatica and therefore he knows how painful it is.
Mares remarked he at first thought this would be the end of Agbeko’s career but since he has recovered, he is very happy for him.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “I just felt bad. He just looked like an old guy limping with the cane. I thought, man, this could be the end of his career. It was like me with my detached retina and when they told me my career could possibly be
over.”
Mares added, “Plus, I have some family members who have had the same injury and they told me it was really painful so I just felt bad for Agbeko. That’s why we gave him a second chance and we thank God he’s better and that he can continue what he loves doing
and that’s boxing.”
