Abner Mares, the former IBF and WBC silver bantamweight champion, nullified the odds and silenced his critics by collecting his careers huge unanimous decision win over Puerto Rican Eric Morel, former WBO NABO super flyweight champion, in a 12-round bout
held on April 21, 2012.
The bout was for the vacant WBC super bantamweight champion and with this win Abner has not only spell bounded the whole boxing universe but has also become the world champion.
The bout headlined the pay-per-view put forth by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and the ring for the extravaganza was stretched at Don Haskins Convention Center situated in El Paso, Texas, United States.
The Saturday night show was co-headlined by the WBA Super World bantamweight championship bout between Anselmo Moreno and David De La Mora. Mares, 26, was clearly the underdog in this bout and nobody had even the slightest expectation of the fact that the
young Mexican proud will rise up at the scenario.
The odds were heavily in favour of Eric who not only possessed an impressive resume but also boasted a decent win and knockout ratio. The situation was totally against Abner but the young lad overcame all the obstacles and eventually collected a unanimous
decision in his favour by huge point difference.
Though Mares was unable to collect a knockout win over Eric yet the win is being dubbed as a career-boosting facet for the surging Mares. Abner was in his 25th bout and boasted an undefeated win streak with 23 wins and just one draw.
The young lad’s resume showed 13 wins by KO, a number extremely lower than Eric’s 23 knockout wins. Morel had the clear upper hand with 46 wins in a total 48 bouts. In addition, Eric, widely known as the ‘Little Hands of Steel’, has proudly held several
titles round his waist.
The bout kicked off and both men threw everything they had in their arsenal at each other. The duo did not look back at all and just kept on pummelling and battering each other. The competition was truly a toe-to-toe one and Abner did at some moments felt
slightly intimidated but his strenuous training came in to aid him and at the end of the day it was Abner who made his people proud by grabbing the WBC gold.
After the 12-round showdown, Abner admitted that Eric was a tough opponent and the fight has improved him a lot. Mares commented, “This is the sharpest I have ever been. I’m surprised he took it so well. Morel’s style helped a lot. I was really surprised
he could take my power. Eric is a great fighter. I’m more complete now, but there’s still room for improvement. I feel a lot stronger at this new weight.”
Abner is now eyeballing names such as Nonito Donaire and Jorge Arce and even mentioned this fact in his post-bout speech. Mares remarked, “I am not afraid of anyone. I want Nonito Donaire, or Jorge Arce next.”
