Abner Mares reckons fighting Nonito Donaire will decide the best bantamweight – Boxing news
The World Boxing Council’s Silver 118-pound Champion, Abner Mares, reckons a fight with Nonito Donaire, a three-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organisation Bantamweight World Champion, will decide who the best
bantamweight in the world is.
Abner Mares is set to take on the current International Boxing Federation’s Bantamweight world champion, Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko in the Bantamweight Tournament Final on August 13, 2011 at the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Since this was an open tournament to all, everyone including Joseph Agbeko believes the winner would rightfully earn himself a label as the best bantamweight fighter in the world. However, Mares think The Filipino Flash, Donaire, who did not participate
in the tournament due to some reason is the man to beat.
Though Mares admitted the winner of his and Agbeko bout will be called the best bantamweight, he stated either him or Agbeko will have to fight Donaire later on to really earn the rights of being called as the best bantamweight fighter in the world.
“It’s only right to say that the winner of this is the best bantamweight,” Mares said. “Again, I said that later on in the future, that fight is going to happen where myself or Joseph Agbeko is going to face Nonito Donaire. That’s the fight to make. There
is no other way around it. That’s the fight to be made and then that will really determine who the best bantamweight is.”
In the end however the undefeated Mexican prospect, who has won 21 of his 22 professional fights (1 Draw), with 13 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, remarked now the show has been called and since he has been through a lot of trouble, there will
be only one best bantamweight left.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “But for now, the show is called, ‘The best bantamweights in the world,’ and so, after Saturday, there will only be one best. I’ve been through a lot.”
