Abner Mares says he and Joseph Agbeko deserve to be called best bantamweight boxers – Boxing news
The undefeated ring star and World Boxing Council’s Silver 118 pounds champion Abner Mares reckons he and the International Boxing Federation’s Bantamweight Champion Joseph Agbeko have proven themselves as the best bantamweight fighters out there.
The 25-year-old Mares is set to take on Agbeko in a unification bout for the IBF title and WBC Silver bantamweight belt in the Bantamweight Tournament final on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mares, who has won all of his 21 fights out of 22 (1 draw) including 13 by the way of a knockout, told the media the Tournament was made up of the best bantamweight fighters of the world. Therefore, Mares believes since he and Agbeko both have reached the
final, they have earned themselves a label of the best bantamweight fighters.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “This tournament is made up of the best bantamweights. A lot of fighters had the opportunity to get in it and some chose not to for whatever reasons. We definitely deserve to be called the best bantamweight out there.
There are a lot of great and top pound-for-pound bantamweights out there. After this fight we should be called the best then after this, other fights can be made.”
Mares and Agbeko were both scheduled for April 2011 but the fight was postponed as Agbeko was injured with sciatica less than a week before the showdown was to take place.
Since after more than 3 months when Agbeko has fully recovered for his IBF title defence, many think Mares will step into the ring with a different game plan.
However, Mares has claimed he will not change his game plan at all.
Mares remarked, “I had a lot of people ask me since he got injured, am I going to do it differently now? No, not really. Same game plan.”
There are only 10 days left now in this mega showdown between the Mexican and the Ghanaian boxer and let’s see whether Mares is able to maintain his undefeated record or not.
