Abner Mares says he would have offered Joseph Agbeko a rematch anyway – Boxing news
The current International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council Silver Bantamweight titleholder, Abner Mares, has claimed he would have given a rematch to Joseph Agbeko with or without the IBF’s involvement.
The undefeated Mexican prospect, Mares, who holds a perfect record of winning 21 of his 22 professional fights (1 Draw), with 13 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, stated he is happy for the rematch, as he vowed he will prove himself before ending
up all the controversies. Mares insisted he would have offered Agbeko a rematch without the involvement of IBF.
“This time, it’s time to clear up the controversy and Abner truly deserves to be called the best bantamweight in the world,” Mares’ manager Frank Espinoza said.
“I am really happy and I can’t wait to fight December 3. As you all remember after the first fight I mentioned I will have no problem giving him a rematch. If the IBF ordered it or not, he deserves it. I want to fight the best and I will prove that I am
the champion,” Mares said.
Agbeko, who carries a record of winning 28 of his 31 professional fights, with 22 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, in the meanwhile also claimed to prove himself.
“I will fight hard and I will prove that I can be good in a fair fight,” Agbeko told the media.
Mares and Agbeko fought each other in a 12-round bout on August 13, 2011 at the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada but unfortunately their fight which had the IBF/WBC Silver Bantamweight titles on the lines ended up in a storm of controversy.
Though Mares was awarded with a majority decision, many think Agbeko won the fight. Therefore, IBF ordered a rematch within 120 days and as a result to which both pugilists will meet again on December 3, 2011 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
After all that has happened so far it is fair to say the Mares-Agbeko bout will certainly be an explosive one.
