Abner Mares scheduled to take on Eric Morel on April 21 – Boxing News
Mexican pugilist Abner Mares is scheduled to take on Puerto Rican Eric Morel on April 21. The bout will be for a vacant world title and will be part of Showtime’s fight events. Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas, is the chosen venue for the fight.
It should be noted here that Abner Mares had given up his bantamweight title earlier this year in February, as he wanted to complete at the junior featherweight level. It seems like his wish has come true and now it is Eric Morel he will face at the junior
feather level.
Details of the bout are not out yet. According to Golden Boy Promotions, a press conference will soon be organised to discuss the details. All we know of yet is that Golden Boy Promotions has labelled the fight as ‘Battle on the Border’.
Abner Mares made his debut in 2005 in a bout against the then well known pugilist Luis Malave from Puerto Rico. Mares won the fight and got the opportunity to go for a title bout against the WBO NABA Bantamweight champion Isidro Garcia. Luckily, Mares defeated
Isidro and grabbed the WBO NABA Bantamweight title. Not only this, he went onto win his next three fights until his career came to a standstill when he suffered an eye injury, which needed immediate surgery.
Mares went head to head with the IBF Bantamweight champion Yonnhy Perez on May 22, 2010. Yonnhy came to the ring with an undefeated streak. Mares was pretty strong headed and was sure-footed that he wants to win. He gave his best but unfortunately he could
not make it to the mark and the bout ended in a draw. However, most analysts and former fighters rated Mares as winner of the fight.
As of now, Mares has given up his title to fight at the junior featherweight level which indeed is an act depicting his courage and ambitiousness. If Mares succeeds against Morel, he will become the champion at the level, which surely is something he would
want the most right now. However, if he loses the bout the his sacrifice will become meaningless.
