Question:

Abnormal Smear Experiences?

I have been having regular smears since I was 20 and last year I had some borderline changes. Despite these minor changes, my GP advised me that it was ok for me to continue trying for a baby as it would just mean that I would have my repeat smear during my post natal examination. I got pregnant straight away and my smear that I had done during my post natal came back as normal. I need to have another repeat one done in 3 months just to make sure everything is ok.

Are abnormal smears quite common and if so, what experiences have you women had?

  1. I had one where the results came back as "atypical" which is not the same as "abnormal".  My doctor said that it wasn't really that concerning.  They tested me for HPV to be sure, and it came back negative.  She said that these things could be caused by having s*x in the last 24 hours.  A year later it was normal again.  I'm really not sure how common things like this are.  It sure can be a bit scary though.
