  1. Yes, in one way i do and in another i dont.. I think that if you are young and are not ready for a child then yes, it is probably better for the baby to get an abortion, but in saying that, if they arent ready to have a baby then they shouldnt be having s*x.. so thats a hard one..

  2. Simple solution. Raise the cost of abortion to $5000 and have health insurance cover abortions for medical purposes only. Problem solved.

  3. I have thought about this quite a bit over the years. The wide spread of opinions is incredible, matched only by the passion of the activists on all sides. This is an issue that few people are even able to have a civilized discussion about. Complicating it further is that there are few that hold a black-and-white view of the issue. The majority of people in the US see abortion as a giant grey area with varying degrees of abortion considered acceptable. Very few people hold the position of unlimited abortion access or no abortion under any circumstances. Below is the process I went through to come up with my position on the matter.

First, I asked myself the question at what point does a human being obtain "personhood" and as such gain all the legal and moral protections that status entitles them to? There are some who say that the point of personhood is 28 days AFTER birth, at which point you still should be allowed to abort. In fact, there is a professor of ethics at Princeton University that actively advocates this position. This is the position that spurred “Born Alive” legislation that says if a woman has an abortion and the baby survives, that doctors cannot withhold care and let the baby die on the operating table. Others say up to the point of birth. These folks, such as Barak Obama, would hold that this type of infanticide as well as partial birth abortion is a reasonable procedure. Or perhaps just before while the mother is in labor. Or 6 months of gestation or 3 months or three weeks. I wrestled with this for a long time.

Then I looked at the issue a different way. Does human life have an imputed value or an intrinsic one? If we say that it is imputed, meaning the value is derived from something else, some outside criteria, then any one of the above positions would be equally valid. We as a society would decide what criteria to select. My problem with this is what criteria do you use? On what basis is a baby at 6 weeks more valuable than a baby at 5 weeks? Is a baby that has not yet developed a heart still a baby? This hit really hard on my wife and I when we lost one of our children. Lynne had a miscarriage a few years ago. When people with strong pro-choice sentiments gave us their condolences, they referred to the fetus as a child, even though she (we named her Grace, even though we do not know for sure if she was a she or a he. It made it easier to explain to the children what happened and easier for Lynne and I to grieve our loss) was at the same gestational point, 9 weeks, that they believed abortion was merely removing some unwanted tissue of the mother. So, the criteria used is whether or not a child is wanted. If that is so, then why? The characteristics of an object of any sort are not contingent on another persons belief for perception.

By similar logic, if the value of human life is imputed, it can also be taken away, depending on what some person or group of persons believe that life is worth. So if you happen to be mentally retarded or black or Jewish, it would be perfectly reasonable for you to be killed off for the good of the community if they believe it. I have a friend who is paralyzed from the neck down and constantly in pain. There are some in the world who would look at her and say that she has no quality of life or that the money and effort to support her would be better used on others. They would have her die due to her handicap. But knowing her the way I do I find the notion that she is without a quality of life to be ridiculous on its face. She is a writer, a painter, a social worker, and heads up an international charity. I’d call that a pretty good quality of life. So would her husband who married her years after her accident put her in the wheelchair. Thus, the imputed value logic is shown to me to be completely arbitrary. Following any of the “prior to this point it is not human but at this one on it is” positions is likewise arbitrary and does not answer the question of personhood.

But consider the proposition that human life has an intrinsic value. That it is valuable simply because it is human life and no other reason. No measure or quantification of the value of it, it is and that is enough. It is sort of like gold. Gold is valuable because it is gold, not because we as a society stood up one day and said, “we are going to make gold valuable”. Gold has an intrinsic value as opposed to an imputed value, such as paper currency. Paper currency is worthless in and of itself. It has value only because we say it has a certain value.

This position then would support a clear line between human life and not human life. With this position, you are a human at the point that you have a unique genetic code. In other words, at conception. Prior to that, there was no “you”. The male and female reproductive components in and of themselves are not a unique genetic code, but merely parts of the donors. It is only when they combine to create new life do “you” begin to

  4. I think that without a health reason or rape or something like that then they should be made to have it and give it up for adoption unless they are huge drug takes or something

  5. Aren't there enough babies and children in this world without parents? Why would we promote everyone to have a baby they do not want and give it up just to join the already massive amount of poor babies who have no families. I do think abortion as birth control is wrong, i do think that abortion when you are older and more mature and have an unplanned pregnancy and cannot care for a child, is ok. What parents need to do is put there daughters on birth control pills when they become sexually active. Yes....i can see the comments now, that would promote them to have s*x. They are going to do it anyways, why not have them protected against pregnancy.

  6. A better idea is aborting the girls who are dumb enough to use abortion as birth control

  7. Would you prefer these young girls to have the children? Would you like to be one of those neglected children?

I think personally these young girls should be sterilised. Unfortunately that isn't an option so yeah I'd rather see them have an abortion then bring an unwanted child into the world I've sen far too much of that happen it isn't fair. It's all good to suggest they put them up for adoption, but if these young girls thought like that, they probably wouldn't be having meaningless unprotected s*x to begin with

  8. First of all, I don't know a woman out there that has just said "Oh if I get pregnant, Ill just get an abortion"

It's not an easy thing to go through for anyone! I also noticed you put those "young girls". Those young girls don't have that kind of attitude, I can assure you. For most young girls, getting pregnant and then having to abort their baby is a very hard thing to have to do. Most of the time its because they cant afford to have the baby or their parents push them towards that route.

I agree that young girls should be way more responsible, but you are wrong to think that any female, young or older, uses abortion for birth control.

So my answer is, sure, it may be easy to find a clinic who will perform one, but it is in no way shape or form "easy" to get one. Its probably one of the hardest things that a female would have to go through.

  9. Actually in most states you have to go through a Doctor and sometimes prove you are incapable of raising the baby or in having a baby will have negative effective on the mother or there is a serious deformity.

The rules really depend on the state you live in.

Plus you are stereotyping these girls as all being underage, misinformed, careless, and s***s. Business women who run corporations could have an abortion like that little girl down the street.

Also did you know lots of pro-choices would never get an abortion they just want the option to be avaible in cases of rape, incest, and possible death of the mother scenarios. They would prefer we teach our kids how to use condoms, birth control, say no, what to do if you do get pregant, how to tell your parents, not to simply shame our children.

  10. wow, i cant believe some of these answers, what do i think.... well ( here we go, lol) i don't think anyone but the person who is pregnant has the right to decide weather or not they should have an abortion. and i don't think hiking up the cost is the answer either, there's so many ppl out there opposed to adoption, they don't agree with abortion and they don't like young single mothers. gee doesn't leave much. i think some people are too judgemental, as for " i think they should be sterilised" that's a disgusting thing to say. it sounds like something that went on in the death camps so that people that weren't seen as perfect were unable to reproduce. i can promise you that no women, be them 15 or 45 thinks, oops oh well ill just have an abortion and move on with it. its something that stays with you for the rest of your life. I'm not pro life/pro abortion, I'm pro choice, i think we need to have all the options available to all women, regardless of race age or financial situation. we aren't living in the dark ages, everyone is entitled to whatever medical procedure they choose. so yeah, that's what i think, thanks for asking, lol. ifeel a lot of thumbs down coming on.

  11. I think that the only way they should be allowed to have one is if they have a medical problem and the baby can't survive or maybe if they got raped. Or that the cost to get an abortion should be increased, that way for the people that dont want a baby will actually think before having unprotected s*x or havin s*x at all!

  12. i don't think abortion should be used as a form of birth control. young teens need to see what the consciences are for having un protected s*x at a young age. But on the other hand i do think that if u were raped, incest, dna issues(fatal) then you should be allowed to have an abortion. AND i really don't think doctor should be offering parents that have fertility treatments abortions. Most parents that find out that they are caring multiples don't want to even think about reduction. they have been trying for what seems to them as forever. and that thought is the farthest thing from their mind.

That being said abortion is wrong and cruel punishment to a unborn baby(fetus, embryo, what ever you want to call it). The baby did nothing wrong the mother did and she needs to step up to her mistake and take care of the baby or at least adoption is an option.
