Question:

About Adult adoption?

I am 36 years old and I was wondering if someone could help me? My real mom and I don't get along and she never wanted me. I was to have my step mom adopt me. She is more of a mom than my really mom is and I know it would mean the world to her. I just don't know how to do it and do I have to tell my real mom? Any help would be great.

  1. A friend and her siblings were adopted by their step father as adults.  Since they were over the age of 18 they didn't have to involve the biological father.  They hired an adoption attorney and it was a breeze for the step father ~ now father ~ to adopt them.

Start with an adoption attorney in your county or parish.

  2. You can go to the courthouse and ask for the proper papers.  You do not need your real mom's permission, however, she should be advised as your legal status changes.

Things that change include inheritance. For instance, if you were adopted and your real mom died without a will, you are not eligible to receive anything unless you are specifically listed as you are not a legal relative. If your real mom fell ill and was unable to make decisions for herself, you do not have the legal authority to do anything.   On the flip side, she couldn't make medical decisions for you either. Your new mom would.  Your new mom would also be the legal grandmother of any of your children.

I know several people who were adopted as adults.  Considering the circumstances you describe, I encourage you to do so ASAP!  Congratulations!

  3. Here is a very interesting article:

It depends on the State, but for most, because you are over 18, you do not need your biological mother or father's permission.  You and the person that you wish to adopt you just have to consent to it.

I can totally understand why you would want to do this even though you are 36.  I was raised by abusive parents and although I didn't ever consider being adopted by anybody else, I did take another step as an adult and I legally changed my first and middle names because of the idiotic names they gave me.

I think that is a wonderful sign of love and respect for your Step Mom -- I hope you are able to do this easily.

  4. This sounds really stupid. Why would you put both of these people against each other for something so retarded? How could you do that to your mother? I don't care what happened when you were younger. Your mother is older and wiser, and would never make the same mistakes.

Shame on you for being so cruel to your own mother.

  5. Why not just make up a really nice certificate on your computer and have you and your step mom sign it?  You can have it framed and hang it on your wall.  As an adult, the whole legal thing just isn't necessary.
