  1. You first must choose between civilian and military training. Both paths are equally valid ways to begin your career as a pilot, and both have many rewards and many challenges. The military provides exceptional training at no cost, but don't be mislead into thinking it is easy. It's not like you just sign up and suddenly you're a pilot. Pilot slots may be very competitive or may have strict requirements for entry. Plus, you have to commit several years of service.

Civilian training has no required service and there is no competition for entry, but the financial cost is extremely high. Please investigate both options thoroughly before deciding, and know exactly what you are getting into either way.

As far as civilian schools are concerned, there really isn't any ranking system. A small "mom and pop" school can be just as good as a large more popular school. Do your homework on any flight school and make sure it is right for you.

There is one that has a very good reputation and handles a lot of foreign students. All of my instructors trained there and had nothing but positive things to say about the experience. Check out Bristow Academy in Florida, USA:

You can find other (mostly) US flight school listings here:

I don't know if training in the US is the least expensive or not. My understanding is that many Europeans come here for training to save money. Of course if you move to another country and live there for a year or two, that will add to your cost as well.

You can read more about the helicopter industry and flying helicopters here:

Please do a lot of research before you start training. Talk to pilots and get information from as many resources as possible to help your planning and decisions. Don't just dive in head first and sign right up at the first school or first military recruiter. Prove to yourself that the path you have selected is the right one for you before beginning.

    Is it a bright career?

It depends on who you ask. For every pilot who says the career is awesome, there is another who says it sucks. Of course all of the flight schools say that there has never been a better time to be a pilot. I wouldn't put too much faith into any of that. If you are determined to succeed then you will. It is a challenging industry, and there will be many hurdles to overcome, but many rewards to reap as well. It takes a sustained effort over many years, but you can definitely have a great career as a pilot as long as you want it badly enough.

    Good luck and have fun!

  2. Darn sure is not Silver State!

Do a hitch in the US Army, you will get your training for free,

and come out prepared  for the COMM and CFI
