  1. In nucleotides the phosphate end is the 5' and the sugar end is 3'.

    DNA polymerase cannot initiate replication without a primer.  It can only add nucleotides to an already existing strand.

    Phosphates are removed from free nucleotides to provide the energy needed for DNA replication.
