How well preserved are the bones and antlers after being buried in peat for thousands of years, and how many have ben found?

  1. The bones and antlers of most were very well preserved. There are tons of cool pics (see links) of skeletons on exhibition around the world. I don't believe there is an accurate count as to how many have been found in bogs. They (skeletons) were also found in caves. The National Museum of Ireland has almost 200 specimens of skulls and antlers in their collection alone.

    There is a wonderful book called "The Bog People" by P.V. Glob. A great source of info. & pictures of ancient people that were sacrificied and ritually placed in bogs. (Denmark)


  2. I don't know how many have been found but peat bogs are remarkable in their ability to preserve soft tissue. However, they are acid and might dissolve bone (including antlers)
