Question:

About Modern Dance?

What's everything you can tell me about modern dance? Don't write any novels, and you don't have to mention history. But what's it like being in a modern dance class? I've heard that it rebels against classical ballet, but is it okay to take ballet and modern dance classes? What are the differences between ballet and modern? Some characteristics of modern dance? Anything you can tell me would be great, including any classes that might be good to take along with it.

  1. Modern dance is, anything. It's great to get into. It does rebel against classical ballet because it isn't as "persnickety" and the perfect body form and placement isn't as critical. It is actually better to take ballet with modern, because you have a good range of movements that can be used differently in modern class. Ballet is much more straightforward, but modern focuses on different aspects, like improvisation in movement rather than technique. Modern dance can be choppy movements, smooth movements, quick, slow, etc. It can be jazz-based or ballet-based, it doesn't matter. It's always barefoot! Jazz could be good to take with ballet, because ballet does make you very stiff and unable to "wiggle" around. Hope I helped and didn't write too much!
