I'm considering buying a motor scooter like a Honda Metropolitan or Elite 80. Do you need a motorcycle license?

Can you drive one on a freeway? Any opinions?

  1. I have a metropolitan. It's pretty nice, but it can NOT go on a freeway. You just can't get it going fast enough to be safe. No motorcycle license needed for under 50ccs (which the metropolitan is) and you can even park them in bike racks! (where I live at least)

I got mine to go 42 MPH once... but I was also going down a hill... Still felt stable at least.

I got my Metropolitan less than a month ago and am already thinking about upgrading to a 250cc motorcycle. Going in to take the test tomorrow to get my temps actually.  I want to have something that can get me from school to home (roads more than 35 mph), and I still want it to have good MPG.

The fact that the Metropolitan gets ~100mpg is really cool, but the Yamaha V-Star 250 gets ~70mpg, which is still good, and gets you on more roads.

It all depends on where you need to go.

PS, the elite 80 is a 80cc engine, so you would need a motorcycle license for it, and the increase in speed is NOT going to be enough for you to get up to speed on freeways.  Plus, if you're going for a moped... The metropolitan looks SO much better.

  2. Just don't. Just don't. Scooters are more dangerous than motorcycles.

  3. any scooter 125cc or less is too slow for the highway

the smaller scooters are only recommended for level city streets and side roads with less than a 45 mph speed limits and only designed for short commuter trips of 8 to 10 miles or less

  4. you need a motorcycle license its over 50cc's

scooters a little slow to drive on freeways
