About Rose of Sharon ?

I have 2 Rose of Sharon bushes (they also come in a tree). Anyway some of the branches on both bushes drooped really bad in a couple of areas, I tried tieing them up but they were too heavy and started pulling the other branches down. Well my question is I'm posting this it is Aug. 15th I just got through cutting back both bushes (dramatically). Some lower branches I actually had to saw off they were so big. Both shrubs still had some flowers on them but I also noticed (before cutting) some of the leaves are already turning yellow and they both had lots of seed pods too.

If anyone really knows about these plants or has done this at this time of year to one will these come back ok next spring?

Oh and I, left alot of growth on the top, I basically trimmed from the ground up so that the bushes are now straighter and not so round. Thanks for any and all your help.

  1. I agree they are a very tough plant.  I transplanted mine (when I shouldn't have) in the heat of the summer and it looked pitiful I was sure it was dead but I let it be just in case...next spring it was gorgeous.  So I would let it be water well and hopefully next spring you will be pleasantly surprised!

  2. Rose of Sharon is an extremely resilient plant whether it be a tree or shrub, it was a good choice to leave the upper growth in order for it to finish its growth for this season. However trimming the bottom parts will not kill or harm the bush itself, just hte areas that you cut. It will seem stressed, which it is, but no worries, next season she will be just fine. Good luck and beautiful blooms! Hope i eased your mind a bit!
