About Somatic Disorder? Mom suffers from EVERYTHING

My mother claims to have Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrom, Irritable Bowel Sydrome, Syncope, Depression, Attention Deficit Disorder, Colitis, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Seizures, Degenerative Disk Disorder, recurrent blindness, tachycardia, and other things too numerous to mention. She seems to have "attacks" of these things when she feels snubbed or if someone around her is sick and getting attention. Anyone else suspicious?

  1. it does sound suspicious, as all of those disease symptoms can be self-induced or caused by stress. Read up on Munchausen syndrome, and see if you can't get her to a counselor.

  2. Bless your heart! She needs to let her diagnosis go and start living her life. I think I would ask her, "So, how's that working for you?" the next time she rattles off her symptoms.

  3. One day just offer to take her some place like a psychologist or something. Tell her it's for something else. Tell the doctor that your suspicious about her supposed disorders and that you think she might something else and you want to get her help for that. So they would evaluate her and let you know what she really has. Then you could be more relaxed or know what to really worry about.

If she doesn't want to go and refuses to go then you know she doesn't really have all that.

Sorry for what you're going through and good luck.
