  1. Art is something that stimulates the finer senses. Art touches sense of beauty, quest for meaning, and it should be uplifting, in some way at least. Any piece of art should add something to you, and make you more than when you started appreciating it.

This is what I think,ART is. If it is not uplifting, it is not ART.

  2. Art is anything that stimulates our senses.

  3. People have been saying you can't define art, but I think it's any non-practical activity that people do for purposes of self-expression...or any practical activity that employs media in an artistic fashion.

Thus, it's "art" if you manipulate sound (music), paint, stone, your own body (dance or mime), words, light, food, clothing, automobile finishes, or anything in ways that you feel are expressive--OR if you make a work of music, a painting, a sculpture, a dance, etc. in a way that's practical (didactic, instructional, profitable).

Of course, in the case of cuisine, there's always that practical aspect--you've got to eat.  But you can nourish yourself quite well on the raw diet; cuisine focuses on the aesthetics of flavor rather than nutrition.

How important is it to society?  It seems that the urge for self-expression is one of the great defining features of humanity.
