Question:

About being a street musician in the state of Michigan?

I have a string Quintet, and we are interested in performing on the street as a form of advertisement as well as to make extra money.

We have a few places in mind where we may be able to play while still keeping up with the general federal laws when it comes to this; which are basically to stay out of the way and not be obnoxious.

I searched for laws on this on www.mi.gov, but could find no laws requiring a license or fines, etc.

Should I contact my city and ask permission, or is this unnecessary?

And does anyone have any further tips for street musicians?

Thanks!

  1. I would ask the city, because I was informed that in Michigan, it is illegal for street musicians to play for tips. So I would double check, just to make sure. Also I'm sure that it would be better to ask permission, rather than being surprised if you are required to pay a fine.

I hope it works out for you, because I always enjoy street musicians. ^-^

  2. wear coats

  3. Go to local City government buildings. I bet it's a city-by-city ordinance sort of thing. You may have to get a permit to do what you want to do, but it would be well worth your while.

Another option would be just to go ahead and play your music, do your thing without getting permission. If any authority stops you, ask how to do it legally. They'll let you know.... probably without a ticket or anything because ignorance in this circumstance is probably just fine.  It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission in most city government rules.

  4. I don't know the laws, but there is a guy that plays his sax down by the Greektown Casino, downtown Detroit, fairly loud and makes a ton of money busking.
