I'm from chicago. I'm going to take my driving written exam which I'm hoping to do good on. Does any one out there know what is on the test or how many question can you get wrong? Also, I'm also going for a permit to learn how to drive. How long should it take me to learn. Is it safe to learn while there's snow on the ground or should I wait until the summer?

  1. I'm in the UK but due to sit my practical test on Thursday!  (Sorry I can't be of any help on the written content.....)

It's a hard one to call - it's not just going to be snow that'll cause problems - there's ice (which isn't fun to drive on for anyone!), but due to the seasons, you may find that at the moment the sun is quite low in the sky and very bright - I had my final driving lesson this morning, and was really having to be careful at junctions where I was facing the sun, as it does really hurt your eyes and make it difficult to see!

Snow is something you'll have to encounter at some point, although it might be better for you to deal with it once you've passed your test and you can drive with confidence in normal conditions.  I'd say wait for the spring once the snow has cleared and then hopefully pass in the summer!

In the UK you can learn to drive and sit your theory at the same time (although you have to pass your theory before you can do the practical test).  Speak to some local driving schools and see what they say.  Depending on how bad snow gets near you, it may be that they won't take any new learners out until conditions improve, but will possibly give lessons to those who've already been learning for a while.  Your first lesson, there's a lot to take in - making the car work, observation, speed, hazard perception - add in lack of traction and what feels like a steering wheel with a mind of it's own, and you'll really be in at the deep end!

You might find in the US that some driving schools have computer simulators where you essentially sit in a car in a room, and you have a lesson, which teaches you how to drive the car, and the roads are all in the simulation, so you get the hang of driving before you actually get out on the road for real!

  2. I don't remember the questions, but it certainly will touch on braking and following distances, etc.

I think you should learn in winter, if a safe location is available for you, You need winter driving skills and after driving a winter, rainslicked and dry roads are much easier.

as for how long, long enough for you to feel in control of the vehicle and be calm and focused while driving.

If you have two side view mirrors, learn to use them both, practice backing into wide parking spots using those mirrors. Learning to use the right side view mirror is very helpful and practice the parallel parking thing. Good luck and be safe.
