That's a very general question.  However the gas gage in a car is a good example of an electronic instrument.  There is a float within the gas tank that detects the gas level.  Movement of the float may vary a potentiometer (variable resistor) that is part of an electronic circuit.  The position of the resistor determines how much current (milliamps) flows in the circuit which is attached to an electromagnet that deflects the gas gage needle.  The needle position can be compared to a scale marked E, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, F to determine how much gas is left in the tank.  Basically, the needle position is analogous to the gas tank level.  The system therefore represents an analog computer.  Now, the analog output of the level detector can be converted to a digital signal which would represent a hybrid (analog/digital) computer.  Of course there are also purely mechanical computers such as a spring-wound wristwatch that computes time.
