  2. If you have the chance, visit Giethoorn! They call it the Dutch Venice. There's lots of water and gondola's. Very romantic and quite unknown to outsiders, who mostly don't look any further than Amsterdam.

    Here's the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giethoorn

    Here's some pictures: http://images.google.nl/images?q=giethoo...

  3. When I spent 6 months in The Netherlands, I lived in with a family in Hoorn. (about half an hour north of Amsterdam) I went to school there for a while, enjoyed the city. I can really recommend the city. The location is just great. The city center with its harbors, beautiful monuments, museums, churches, loads of shops, nice parks, even a little beach. Even after 6 months, the city still wasn't boring. And the ice cream at Vivaldi is really magnificent...

And everything is close by. Enough picturesque villages to visit in the area. If you drive for 45 minutes to an hour you're at the Noordzee. But you really don't have to go there, since you can sunbathe in Hoorn just fine in summer.

I still go there every once in a while.

  4. It depends on what you like.

A very pretty fishing village is Enkhuizen (easy to reach by train from Amsterdam).

If you want modern architecture and art - Rotterdam would be a good idea.

If you want shopping, but avoid the crowds - Alkmaar, Haarlem, Hoorn are good choices.

So, there is enough choice - and it`s yours to choose.

  5. If I were you I'd check out some city's in Brabant. It's beautiful there. Also the place where I live, Schagen (above Amsterdam) Is a beautiful little town. You have enough shops, and there's a market every Thursday with a parade in summer. Also it's very close to the sea.

I prefer Alkmaar (city about 30 minutes north of Amsterdam) above Amsterdam. it's just as live like and pretty, but smaller and a little less crowded.

But these are just what I like best. If I were you I'd look on the internet and find what you like best. I think it's great you want to see more of the Netherlands. I don't like it when people think it contains only of Amsterdam.

  6. I lived in the city of Groningen for six years, and have only good things to say about the place .... it's got a busy, compact city centre, has a large student population, plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants, plenty of museums and art galleries, a few very nice parks, and other castles etc in the area. Naturally there are coffeeshops and red light areas, but these are small fry compared to what's in Amsterdam.

Utrecht is also supposed to be good, but I haven't been there much.

You can do more investigating through the Dutch tourist website: www.vvv.nl.

  7. Utrecht is very nice
